Competitions

Throughout the winter season we play festive and end of season competitions to add a bit more of a competitive edge to the society. Below are our competitions and details about them.

Christmas Scramble

The Christmas Scramble competition is our annual festive competition. Now in its third
year of being played it is always a favourite attracting a high number of players. The rules are simple. Everyone turns up in the morning and watches the draw. Players are drawn in pairs and their handicap is half the average of the combined players handicap

Once the draw is complete the players head out onto the course to play. Most rules are the same as a usual golf round apart from one simple change. As a pair you both tee off. You then as a pair decide which ball is the better ball and then both play your next shot from this position. You carry on in this fashion throughout the entire hole and record a score together. Each player in the pair must have at least 8 tee shots chosen.

The winners are the pair that have the best stableford score on the day. It’s normaly £5 in per player to put into the kitty and 1st and 2nd place share this between them, as well longest drive and closest to the pin winners.

Ryder Cup

Brand new for this year the Ferndown Wayfarers Society Ryder Cup, played over two days and played in true Ryder Cup Matchplay Style. Two captains will be appointed the teams of Europe and USA and will compete over 54 holes to decide who should win.

On the Saturday morning we start Foursomes. Foursomes format is played in the Alternate Shot format. Basically this means that you play in pairs against another pair but you and your partner take alternate shots up the fairway. The winners are the pair
that win the most holes.

After lunch and in the afternoon we then move onto the Fourballs. Again played in a pairs format but slightly different to the morning in that each player plays their own ball
to a finish but the pairs lowest score is all that counts. An example is that Player A scores par but Player B scores 1 over par, the team score is par. If this is better than the opposition pair then you win the hole, and the winners are the pair that win the most holes.

On the sunday we turn up for the final round which are the singles. These are a simple format where you play against someone and if you score less shots than your opposite
number then you win the hole. The winner is the player that wins the most holes.

As you are competing for your team, the winning team is the team that wins the most points over the 54 holes. If at any point a lead is unbeatable then that game is deemed
over and a point is scored.
